Recessed manhole cover set into resin bound

Almost every driveway has an inspection chamber somewhere inconvenient. The cheap answer is to leave the steel lid proud of the new surface. The right answer is a recessed tray cover filled with the same material, so the chamber stays accessible without interrupting the finish.

01

What is a recessed manhole cover?

It is a shallow steel tray with a lifting frame that replaces the standard solid lid. The tray is filled with the same surface material as the area around it, so the chamber disappears into the finish while remaining fully liftable for drainage access.

02

Why not just pave around the existing lid?

Because a painted steel lid sitting proud of a new surface is the first thing anyone sees, and the level change collects water and dirt around its edge. Recessing costs a little more at the time and is the difference between a finished job and an unfinished one.

  • Tray set dead level with the finished surface
  • Same aggregate blend used in the tray as the field
  • Edges kept crisp so the lid still lifts cleanly
03

Can this be done in block paving and porcelain too?

Yes. The same tray system takes cut blocks, porcelain or resin. The only difference is the depth of tray specified, which has to match the thickness of the surface material and its bedding.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the recessed cover as strong as a normal one?

Trays are load-rated the same way as solid covers. A driveway chamber takes a vehicle-rated tray, a garden chamber a pedestrian-rated one.
