# Resin bound driveway, Gloucester

A full-width driveway surfaced in red-brown resin bound aggregate, run from the kerb line to the front door in a single seamless pour, with a charcoal block course holding the open edge.

## Key facts

- **Town:** Gloucester
- **Year:** 2021
- **Surface:** Red-brown resin bound aggregate
- **Edge:** Charcoal block course, haunched

## Can resin bound be laid over an existing driveway?

Only when the base underneath is sound. Resin bound is a surface course, not a structure — laid over cracked or moving concrete it will crack in the same places. The base is assessed at survey and dug out where it fails rather than covered up.

## Why does a resin drive still need a block edge?

Resin bound has no strength at an unsupported edge. A haunched block course gives it something to finish against, protects the arris from wheels clipping it and keeps the boundary line crisp against the pavement.

## How soon can the driveway be used?

Foot traffic is normally fine the following day and vehicles after roughly 48 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. Cold or damp conditions extend the cure, and we delay laying rather than pour into weather that compromises it.

- Foot traffic next day in normal conditions
- Vehicles after around 48 hours
- Laying postponed in rain or low temperatures

## Questions and answers

Q: Does resin bound need sealing?
A: No. The resin is the binder throughout the layer, not a coating on top, so there is nothing to reseal annually.

Q: Will weeds grow through it?
A: Weeds cannot root through a bound layer. Windblown seed can occasionally germinate in surface debris, which washes off.
